You can apply for a visitor visa which allows you to travel and remain in the UK for up to six months if you are not a UK citizen and are visiting as a tourist, visiting family or friends, or travelling for business.

You can apply for a family visa which entitles you to visit the UK for more than six months if:
  • A family member or spouse is a British citizen.
  • A family member or spouse has ILR or settled status.
  • You have a qualifying relationship with someone in the UK who has refugee status or humanitarian protection.
You can also switch from another visa to the family visa at any time.

Which family visa is right for you?

You may be eligible for a specific type of family visa depending on which requirement you meet.

Adult Dependent Relative Visa

If a relative relies on you for care, such as elderly parents or grandparents, and you are already settled or hold refugee status in the UK, you are eligible for an adult dependent relative family visa.

Ancestry Visa

Are you of British descent? You may be eligible for an ancestry family visa. To be eligible, you must demonstrate your UK ancestry, such as providing the birth certificate of a UK-born grandparent/parent, with proof that they were/are a citizen of the Commonwealth.

The Temporary Worker Visa (T5) allows you to work in the UK on a temporary basis. The nature of your visit influences the type of visa you may be eligible for, such as the duration of your stay from six months up to two years. This visa is only suitable if you are seeking seasonal, sporting, religious or charity work, as well as if you are pursuring work experience, training, research, a government-authorised exchange scheme or an oversees government language programme. On this visa, you are allowed to work in the specific job declared in your Certificate of Sponsorship, pursue studies, engage in a second job for up to twenty hours per week, and bring family members as dependents.

Which temporary worker visa is right for you?

Creative Worker Visa/International Sportsperson Visa
If you plan to work as a creative worker such as an actor, dancer, musician or film crew member, or as a sportsperson. As a creative worker, you are entitled to one year, and as a sportsperson, you are entitled to three years.
Government Authorised Exchange Visa
This visa is intended for overseas nationals who are coming to the UK through approved exchange schemes.
International Agreement Worker Visa
If you’re travelling to the UK through an approved exchange scheme, you’re eligible for the government authorised exchange visa.
International Agreement Worker Visa
If you’re travelling to the UK under international law agreements to work, you’re eligible for the international agreement worker visa.
Seasonal Worker Visa
Travelling here to work in horticulture or poultry? You may be eligible for the seasonal worker visa which entitles you to remain here for 6 months if working in horticulture or between October 2 to December 31, in the same year, for poultry.
Youth Mobility Scheme Visa
Interested in experiencing life here in the UK? If you’re a young person from a specific nation, you may be eligible for a youth mobility scheme visa.
Religious Worker Visa
If you’re partaking in religious work or activities such as preaching, pastoral work, or non-pastoral religious work, you can apply for a religious worker visa.
Charity Worker Visa
If you’re undertaking work voluntarily as part of a registered charity in the UK, you may be eligible for the charity worker visa.

The global talent visa is applicable if you’re a leader or potential leader in academia, research, arts, culture or digital technology, and allows for accelerated permanent residency. To be eligible, you will need to have successfully applied for an endorsement to prove that you are a leader or potential leader.

This visa entitles you to live and work in the UK for up to five years.

Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) provides migrants to the UK with the right to live, study and work and remain in the UK permanently without immigration restrictions. To be eligible for ILR, you must:
  • Have resided in the UK for a minimum of five years.
  • Have passed the ‘Life In The UK’ test.
  • Have knowledge of the English language at a B1, B2, C1 or C2 level.
  • Have not spent more than 180 days outside of the UK in any year of the qualifying period.
Under ILR status, you will be free to visit, work, study and reside permanently in the UK, without ever having to apply for another visa. However, you will lose ILR status if you remain outside of the UK for more than two years. Holding ILR status is a requirement for applying for British citizenship. If you currently live in the UK as a settled individual and wish to become a British citizen, you may be eligible to apply for British naturalisation.

To be eligible, you need to have either:
  • Indefinite leave to remain (ILR)
  • Settled status

Upon naturalisation, you will be entitled to the same rights as naturally born UK citizens, including the freedom to live and work without immigration restrictions.
